Cold drawing machine is used to draw metal rod and tube for industrial use. The main goal of this process is to resize metal bars, tubes, and rods that have been extruded or cold rolled to meet strict specifications for many different industrial applications. The process can also increase the strength of the steel by realigning its molecules. The result is a stronger and more accurate product.
During rod drawing, a mandrel is inserted into the bore of the tube or rod and lubricating oil is pumped onto the surface. The rod is then drawn through the die using the trolley jaws to grip and pull it. The resulting reduction in diameter reduces both the outside diameter (OD) and the inside diameter (ID). Proper die selection minimizes wall thickness changes before the mandrel is contacted to avoid excessive force being exerted on the mandrel, which could crack or break it.
The most important quality factor during the drawing process is the ratio of the total wall reduction to the total reduction in diameter, which is known as the Q value. A higher Q value is better because it tends to iron, or smooth, the ID surface; a lower one roughens it. A high-Q drawing schedule requires fewer draws than a low-Q schedule.
In addition to the dimensional requirements of the finished product, the cold drawing process must be balanced with the material properties and the drawing forces required to perform the operation. In order to determine the energy-power parameters of a drawing route, experimental measurements can be made by installing strain gauges in the drawing machine, or simulation can be conducted using such well-known software packages as QForm, ABAQUS, and DEFORM.
Unlike hot drawing, which is performed in an oven, cold drawing is performed at ambient temperatures. This is because the steel is not heated during the drawing process and it does not experience any significant thermal expansion or contraction. The temperature of the steel is maintained constant throughout the process, which allows for more precise control of the dimensions and tolerances of the finished product.
